The King is born !!

Last week Room 6 decided to do art. The first thing we did was draw our outline on white paper, then transfer it on to black paper. We then cut it out and left it to flatten itself out. A few days later we painted using red and yellow to blend a sunset.

We then glued our artwork to the paper. While doing this I enjoyed trying to make everything the same piece. Next time I will try to add more detail.

Kei raro i te tepu te pikitea - The picture is under the table
Kei runga i te tepu te makatiti - The Stapler is on the table
Kei raro i te tepu te pene hinu - the crayon is under the table
Kei raro i te papama te tepu - the table is under the whiteboard

I found it difficult to learn the new phrases and to remember them properly. Next time I will try and draw more of my own images. I enjoyed learning more about the Maori language and how to properly pronounce it properly.

Show not tell

W.A.L.T... Use Show not tell

Over the past two weeks room six has been learning to use show not tell in out writing. This task was to choose an emotion that we have felt and portray it in a piece of writing. While doing this I enjoyed trying to use descriptive language to enhance my writings effectiveness. Next time I will try and get to the point faster. I think I can improve on my sentence structure . Can you tell what emotion I was describing ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I sink down into the arctic concrete beneath me. People say I became as tiny as a mouse almost as if I had completely disappeared. That’s what it felt like. The diminishing comments of my fellow peers became aware to me. I laughed along with them but my voice began to break. I couldn't feel anything except for the sweat along my forehead and the scorching sun beaming down on me. I can smell a smoldering tree almost directly underneath my nose and two copper coils inside my mouth I begin choking on them unable to grasp a hold on my breath. A tear begins to glide down my cheek , I swiftly wipe it away hoping nobody saw.

Ngatu Cloth

W.A.L.T... Write using aspects of an information report structure & Identify the significance of Ngatu in the Tongan culture. Over the last Term room 6 has been studying the Ngatu-Tapa cloth. This is my writing following the Tapa cloths. I enjoyed learning a new thing.

Ngatu - Tapa Cloth

The Ngatu is a tongan word also known as “Tapa Cloth” in many different cultures.
The Ngatu - Tapa cloth is traditionally made from the bark off a paper mulberry tree.
Once the process of making the Ngatu is over the Tongan people use them for Blankets, mats,
Clothes, and sometimes kites. The Ngatu is sacred when you are born you are wrapped in Ngatu
and when you pass away you are also wrapped in it. The Ngatu is mostly used for special
occasions such as - Royal ceremonies , weddings , Birthdays and Funerals. Women in Tonga
have groups in which they all use the process to create a authentic Ngatu.

In the process they begin by - Cutting down the “hiapo” (paper mulberry tree) once they have
done that they peel off the bark . Which they need to create the Ngatu , as it is the main resource
they use to create the Tapa Cloth. Once they have peeled it they hang it out to dry. They then
soak the bark in warm water to make the bark soft enough to stretch into a wider and thinner
strip of bark. They use an ike. They then dry it out once the bark is at the suitable size.
This process is making the feta’aki. The feta’aki is then sent to New Zealand as the hiapo does
not grow well in New Zealand.

While that is happening in Tonga the women in the New Zealand school hall are covering th
e table in the school hall which will be used for the backing of the Ngatu. The line up the Feta’aki
and Join the edges of the backing and the feta’aki with paste to make them one. They then slowly
roll the two bonded pieces together. They carry the Ngatu outside
And lay it out on the concrete to dry in the sun. When it's fully dried they take a piece  of leftover
feta aki and they use brown paint to print out the designs. This is the authentic way to make
Ngatu.

Our process was extremely different in many ways. We went through a stage in which we didn’t
know how to do it. The first try didn’t go to plan. We first had to explore tongan culture more so
we could understand the true meaning of the Ngatu and what the designs mean. We were tasked \
to find some designs we would like to print out to make our own cloths here are some of mine.
Once we had chosen our designs we had to try and draw them on a piece of paper to see if they
were easy enough to draw and cut out. Once we had found out what our final designs were
going to be we printed them onto cardboard. The next week we got split into groups and my
group were chosen to test print our cardboard with ink. THe cardboard kept falling everywhere
so we decided to use shiny cardboard on both sides so that the cardboard doesn't peel.
Throughout the next weeks we put ink on the cardboard and pressed down using a roller to
create our masterpieces. We printed them onto brown paper that was scrunched up and then
Ironed to give it and effect.

Manulua - probably one of the oldest of Polynesian designs. It's origins are unknown but similar
motifs have been found throughout Polynesian art and in early Lapita pottery. I have seen several
explanations indicating that it was either a flower motif or a bird motif. This was one of my final
products that I tried to recreate

Posted Persuasive Writing

W.A.L.T... Write a Persuasive text .
During weeks five and six room six had the task to create a persuasive argument following why
cellphones should or should not be banned. I decided to take the point of view of someone who agrees
that cellphones should be banned. Throughout this experience I enjoyed researching and brainstorming
new ideas. I learnt that cellphones can cause major problems in your life. I think I need to work on
making my writing pieces longer and adding in more complex sentences.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Should Cellphones be banned in school ?

I believe that schools should ban cell Phones because of many reasons , including the fact that they can cause social  isolation and major mental health issues also the fact that cell phones can lead to decrease in academic performance and will.

Your phone can affect your learning majorly in a lot of situations. You could be stuck on social media all day and never get your work done This will cause you not to rise to the academic achievability you are capable of . If you are on your phone you will harm your brain and cause you to forget things. People are becoming more lackadaisical in their day-to-day life . If we are on our phones 24/7 we could begin to write things in acronyms instead of using proper English language. Your learning is being abused because of a hunk of metal.

Although a phone can help in emergencies , students do not need them. Teachers have phones to call emergency services and school have reinforcements to ensure nothing happens. If a family emergency happens parents can contact the school. Some people use the excuse “i’m using it to research” , but we all have chromebooks and there is Ipads on offer for research.

This means that having phones in class is completely unnecessary.

Now introducing the horrific side effects of your phone in class. Your hunk of metal can cause Isolation and Mental issues . Including Anxiety , Depression , and obsession and antisocialism

These are all very serious and let me tell you why. Anxiety is nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying. This can cause you to behave different and can be very serious in some people. It can push you to the brink and in some cases not make you come out of your room/house. Depression is the constant feeling of sadness and/or lost of interest in everything. You can become obsessed with your phone and with social media this will cause you to isolate yourself and be in contact only through messages. This is EXTREME obsession . Your probably thinking why is a phone included in this ? Your phones puts a lot of images in your head that your not good enough or it could make you happy. THis causes you to become obsessed and depressed. Seeing other people you think are better than you but really it’s all in your head.

In conclusion , Cellphones should be banned as they are a distraction for learning and they can permit our tuition and restrict us from learning as much as we can . Our phone can make us all extremely unhappy.

The Key to the Upside down

This week my class had the task of creating a story around a key , The first thing we did was choose a key from a jar and then we had to draw what it unlocked , It could be anything from a car to a theme park . I chose an abandoned Asylum , Then next thing we did was chose and described  our characters , Then we did the same with our setting . After that we had to come up with a solution and a problem . Then we began writing our stories . When doing this I enjoyed letting my imagination go wild , Next time I will try to add more complex punctuation . I think I added in lots of information to ensure the reader had a picture in his/her mind I think I did this well . I like this piece of writing because there is a lot of suspense and the opening sentence hooks the reader in .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My life has all changed because of one significant event that happened about five decades ago . I now sit here in this empty hospital room . Thinking about how it all started … It was the summer of 1954 and I was a young girl , We suddenly had to move away from our house in the country . To live in what looked like a dump ! , it was a hotel with Vines and cobwebs all on the outside which made it look like it was abandoned , but once I stepped inside it was the most elegant , fanciest place I have ever been . It was silk and velvet from wall to wall with the most superb light fixtures , it was the most stunning place on planet earth to me , But I knew it had a secret . I had no idea why we had to move but I was fine with it , There wasn’t much people here only two other families , The Penfolds and The Dobsons . The Pennfolds were an unusual family they never came out of their room and all we could hear was howling and noises all day and night , the Dobsons however never went into their room and they were practically mute . They would walk the halls with no expression on their face just going up and down the stairs in the east wing .I had no knowledge of what was happening but now I know . Once we got settled in I went to explore and I came across what looked like an old shed but I couldn’t get in . It was locked! I decided to make a mission for myself. My mission was to find out what was inside . I started looking for a key . In the light fixtures and in the bedrooms . But I couldn’t find one drop of evidence or one clue , my next stop was the gift shop , they had keys . I bought every single one and tried them but none of them worked . I forgot about it after a couple of weeks until my Seventh birthday which is when my mother came through with a surprise . She gave me a key and said “ Valerina Harper find what this unlocks “ . I sprinted away and into the backyard to where the shed looking building was , I tried the key and it worked ! . From outside it the shed looked like a hospital , but once I stepped inside it all changed . Suddenly it all went black and I took another step and found myself in the hospital , but it seemed different . It was colder and darker and the lights kept flickering . It was like everything was the opposite , or everything was upside down ?< I walked in more and everything was flicking between real life and the upside down . I saw two figures coming towards me , I want to bolt but I can’t seem to move. I look over and they are only teenagers , so I stand my ground and close my eyes . Once i open them they are at my feet like dogs . I ask them their names and they Bark , it’s almost as if someone or something has trained them to be like dogs . I close my eyes again , and once I open them they are now lying on the floor acting like Lizards . I keep opening and closing my eyes hoping they will turn human again . Pig . Cat . Monkey . Rabbit . no human , I try to talk to them to ask their name but it seems like they are inaudible , but they keep tapping . I know I can’t figure this out alone so I go and get the only normal people from the hotel , Nancy Dobson a Nine year old girl who is an absolute Brainiac and Amelia Pennfold she’s as dainty as a fairy but she can write and she is one of the most caring people I know . We go into the hospital / shed together and they’re still tapping , we ask them questions and they tap , I suddenly blurt out “what if they’re communicating through Tapping not talking ?” Then Nancy says “Quick Amelia write this down !” Tap , Pause , dash , Tap , Pause . Its Morse code Amelia says . They get a morse code pamphlet from the front desk and begin to write things down . The Girl said (through morse code ) “ MY NAME IS ALYSSA , PLEASE HELP ME I CAN’T GET OUT “ The boy said “ WE ARE TRAPPED IN THE UPSIDE DOWN , I CAN’T GET OUT I CAN’T I CAN’T ! .Everyday Amelia , Nancy and I go to the shed and talk to them , One day they are human and we can’t believe it , That was the day everything became good . I remember it as if it was yesterday , I was wearing a Bright yellow flowery dress with daisies on it and a white cardigan with black shoes and white stockings . Amelia was wearing a red dress with polka dots and a red cardigan . Nancy was wearing a white blouse with ruffles going up the front , with black pants and she had her hair up in a ponytail with a red ribbon . We went into the shed as usual and they began talking we earned their trust over the past couple of months and we finally understand , These people aren’t Trapped in the upside down they are trapped in their minds and they have the power to project their minds into real life . Which is why I can see them , we help them to get out of their heads and we end up adopting them , they still have powers but they use them for good .hey told us about why they were in the shed and why everything was weird , They were in an insane asylum that became abandoned because they were causing trouble , The families that lived there were not actually there and neither was the hotel , they just convinced our minds that they were there . Nancy and Amelia were make believe but they acted like humans . Now I sit in my hospital bed thinking my life is a lie , but now I have my mother by my side , and my two siblings ; Marcus and Alyssa .
